Graston Technique®

What is the Graston Technique - The Graston Technique incorporates a patented form of instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization that enables clinicians to effectively detect and treat scar tissue and other restrictions that effect normal function.

This technique separates and breaks down collagen cross-links and splays and stretches connective tissue and muscle fibers. This allows an increase in skin temperature and facilitates reflex changes in the chronic muscle holding pattern. In addition, it increases the rate and amount of blood flow to and from the injured area.

The Graston instruments, much like a tuning fork, resonate in the clinician's hands, allowing the clinician to isolate adhesions and restrictions and treat them very precisely.Since the metal surface of the instruments does not compress as do the fat pads of fingers, deeper restrictions can be accessed and treated. The instruments in effect, act like a stethoscope by amplifying what is underneath.

Why is scar tissue an issue - Scar tissue limits range of motion (ROM) and in many instances causes pain, which prevents the patient from functioning as he/she did before the injury.

When viewed under a microscope, normal tissue can take a couple of different fashions, but each has fibers running in the same direction. But when that normal tissue is damaged, it heals in a haphazard pattern or scarring, that results in a restricted ROM and is very often painful.

What can the patient expect - Because the Graston Technique is an advanced form of other types of soft tissue mobilization, patient's can expect the same type of results but with several significantly added benefits.First, there is typically a decrease in the overall time of treatments. These instruments foster faster rehabilitation and recovery and there is less need for anti-inflammatory medication.Graston can resolve chronic conditions previously thought to be permanent. And finally, after successful completion of treatments, most patients can engage in normal everyday activities.

What kind of results does Graston Technique produce - Historically, this technique has resolved 87% or more of all conditions treated. It is equally effective on restoring function and chronic injuries and works well with pre and post surgical patients.

The Graston Technique Instruments, while enhancing the clinician's ability to detect fascial adhesions and restrictions, have been clinically proven to achieve quicker and better outcomes in treating both acute and chronic conditions, including:

Neck sprain/strains

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Tennis elbow (Lateral Epicondylitis)

Rotator Cuff Tendinitis (shoulder pain)

Scar tissue pain

Plantar Fascitis

Golfer's elbow (Medial Epicondylitis)

Trigger Finger

Many, many others
